Molecular Bacteriology Laboratory

Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae or pneumococcus) infection is a leading cause of bacterial pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis in children worldwide and it is estimated that 1.6 million people die from these infections each year, one million of whom are children. In elderly, pneumonia caused by this micro-organism is a major health care problem. Incidence of invasive pneumococcus disease varies substantially by age, genetic background, socioeconomic status, immune status, and geographical location.

Capsular polysaccharides are well known as the major virulence factors of S. pneumoniae. Today more than 93 serotypes have been identified based on the different chemical structures of these polysaccharide. This diversity determines the ability of the serotypes to survive in the bloodstream and very likely the ability to cause invasive disease, especially in the respiratory tract. Many studies have demonstrated that antibodies against polysaccharide are essential for protection against pneumococcal disease. Currently, data on the epidemiology and serotype distribution of pneumococcal disease in Indonesia are limited.Molecular Bacteriolog y Laboratory investigates the pneumococcal disease in Indonesia, such as the epidemiology, bacteriology, clinical, molecular, immunology and vaccine developments.

Research topics:

  • Molecular epidemiology of  Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes  in Indonesian population
  • Antibiotic resistant of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from Indonesia
  • Genomic Analysis of Multidrug Resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae from Indonesia
  • Impact of pneumococcal vaccination
  • Synthetic vaccine development for Streptococcus pneumoniae
